Roles and supervision — Course vs Trip
The space type determines the supervision structure. Crew or instructor, Course or Trip — here is what each means in practice.
Two space types
At creation time, you choose the outing type:
| Type | Supervision |
|---|---|
| Course | Instructor-led — one member may have the Instructor role |
| Trip | Autonomous — everyone is crew, no instructor role |
This choice is fixed at creation and cannot be changed afterward.
Available roles (Course only)
Crew
The standard role. All planning actions are available: add and edit meals, manage provisioning, assign the galley hand, fill in the boat profile, and rename the voyage.
Instructor
A guidance role. The instructor does not modify the plan (meals, provisioning, galley) — they observe it and leave guidance notes in the Notes tab. A banner reminds them of this role inside the space.
The instructor can view all content in the space, but modification buttons are hidden for them.
Autonomous Trip
In a Trip space, there is no instructor role. No member can choose that role at join time, and no Notes tab appears. Everyone has the same permissions.
Banner and visual indicators
- Course, instructor role: a blue banner appears at the top of the space as a reminder of the read-only role.
- Not logged in: an orange banner reminds you that data lives in this browser only.
- Archived space (90 days): a grey banner indicates read-only mode.
